Google AdSense: Monetize your website

Do you run your own website or have exciting content on your blog? Then you should think about using Google AdSense. Because with Google AdSense you can easily get an additional source of income with advertising. In this article, we explain exactly what Google AdSense is, how it works and what you have to do for it.

What is Google AdSense and how does it work?

The search engine giant Google officially sells advertising – namely Google Adwords. In order to increase the range of advertising, Google has founded a so-called advertising network: Google AdSense.

This makes it possible to monetize any website. With short text or advertisements, it is possible to generate more sales with your own website, blog or shop. Thus, one can explain Google AdSense as a so-called “advertising space on the Internet”.

Google AdSense is clever because the text or advertisements are target group-oriented, so Google selects and displays the advertisement individually for the user and his search behaviour. Google, therefore, selects ads that match the content of the website on which these ads are displayed appear. You can decide what the ads look like.

There are two sides that come together via Google AdSense: the advertiser who places the ads and the operator of the website who acts as the publisher. The publisher’s advertising space is then allocated to the highest-bidder advertiser by means of an auction process.

If a visitor to the website then clicks on the advertisement, the publisher receives part of the amount that the advertiser has released for the advertisement. Google keeps the other part as a commission.

The advantages and disadvantages of Google AdSense

Taking a look at the pros and cons of AdSense can help you decide if it’s right for you.

  • Simple application
  • Revenue is generated per click
  • Free registration
  • Design customizable
  • Only ads that are relevant will be shown

  • Constant optimization of the site is necessary
  • No transparency in the composition of the proceeds
  • Payout only at the end of the following month
  • Payout only at a minimum yield of 100 US dollars

How much money can I make with Google AdSense?

There are a few factors that determine the amount of earnings. On the one hand, your website must have a certain quality.

This means that the content on your website or blog must be good enough to attract visitors on a regular basis. And that brings us to the second criterion: the number of visitors. If you have hardly any traffic on your site and only a few users get there, you are of no interest to advertisers. But if you have good content and a reasonable number of visitors, your earnings are automatically higher.

In addition, the amount of revenue also depends on the bids of the advertisers and the click rate. This means: The more people are on your website and click the ads, the more money you can earn.

Basically, as a publisher, you have to meet some Google program guidelines. These contain over 10 technical and content-related criteria for your website.

If you meet these guidelines, you’ll be admitted to the AdSense network. To ensure that the quality of your website is not reduced, Google checks these guidelines at regular intervals and can exclude you from the network if you violate them or fail to comply.

What ads will be placed on my website?

You’re probably wondering if you even have any influence on the topics of the ads if the highest bidder gets your ad space. Basically, the Google algorithm determines which ads fit your website in terms of content. So Google makes sure that website content and advertising content do not conflict, but are ideally coordinated.

Another possibility is that ads are displayed in terms of targeting. This means that ads are targeted to a previously categorized audience. If your website visitor belongs to a certain category, Google will show them appropriate advertising. But because you’re the one providing the ad space, you can ultimately decide whether or not the ad will show up on your website.

Because it is important here that the actual content of your website should not be displaced so that visitors are not deterred. Therefore, Google specifies a fixed number of advertising blocks and banners that may then appear on your website.

5 Types of Ads on Google AdSense

In general, there are five different types of possible advertisements, which differ in their format. As the operator of the website, Google offers you the option of selecting the ad type and size. You can also adapt the design to your website. We briefly present the possible ad formats here.

A text ad consists of a title that includes the link to the website and one or two lines of text. You can customize the display to display either horizontally, vertically, or in a square shape.

Display ads tend to be more eye-catching ads and are basically graphical ad breaks that are also displayed in different formats and orientations. Again, you have the option to display them horizontally, vertically, or squarely.

Link blocks are a sort of collection of Google ads that appear relevant to the website’s topic. You can align these link blocks vertically or horizontally.

Rich media are interactive advertising blocks, such as video ads. When this type of ad is placed, it also increases your earnings as the competition for such ad space is much higher.

These types of ads are specially optimized for display on mobile devices and are designed in the form of images or text.

Google AdSense: registration and placement of advertising

If you now want to offer your website as an advertising platform, you must first register with Google AdSense and create an account. To register you must be 18 years old, operate a website and provide a bank account for the earnings.

  • First, you apply with your website to be included in the advertising network. You place a so-called code snippet in the page code of your website.
  • Google will review your application – approve or reject your website. If you are rejected due to deficiencies, you have the option of applying to Google again after you have corrected the deficiencies.
  • If your application was successful, you enter your information about the advertising space. That means you choose the colour scheme, format and dimensions of your ad. Google generates a code for each of the ad units, which you then insert at a specific point in the code of your website. Within a short time, Google will place your ads, which you can then graphically adapt to your website in the settings.

The difference between Google AdSense and Google Ads

Although Google Ads and Google AdSense are linked, both networks differ in one key factor. While Google Ads itself sells ad space on websites, search result pages or on different platforms and keeps the income completely, Google AdSense looks different.

Because here you sell advertising space as a publisher and Google AdSense only acts as an intermediary who keeps a certain amount of the sales revenue as a commission.

Conclusion: Is Google AdSense really worth it?

Google AdSense offers you the opportunity to build up passive income with a well-running website and good content through advertising placements. You have to meet some requirements, but basically, you can easily earn extra money this way.

You have to keep in mind that Google only pays you the earnings at the end of the month. And only if the amount if above USD70. However, the fact that registration is free, the application is very simple and the advertising is thematically tailored to the content of your website, you as a website operator have hardly any disadvantages.

By making adjustments in the settings, you can also visually adapt the advertising to your website so that it integrates nicely graphically. It is therefore worthwhile to deal with Google AdSense in order to earn a little extra money.
